So.…… this year Denise & myself have decided to ditch the ferry in favour of a scenic ride down to Spain, through France.
A few years ago when Brittany Ferries cancelled our return ferry because of strike action we had to ride from near Madrid in central Spain to Calais. We crossed the Pyrenees and headed diagonally across France and the Massif Central mountains. It turned out to be a lovely ride so we’re going to do some of it again this year.
The routes will use mainly D roads across France and C or L grade roads in Spain. As usual, we will be riding cross country on scenic routes avoiding motorways and sticking to the smaller sweepy swoopy twisty less busy roads where we can enjoy Riding the bike
This is what I’ve planned so far (@ 20/01/2019)
On Saturday 07th Sept we’ll ride from home down to Folkestone, cross via The Tunnel to Calais and head down to Reims for the night.
On Sunday we head southwest down to Thiers, just south of Vichy
On Monday we continue southwest to Toulouse, via Millau, for a two night stop so that we can make a visit to the AIRBUS facility where they build aeroplanes 🙂
On Wednesday11th we head across the Pyrenees and into Spain.
We’re planning to stay in a Castle on Weds night. Its a Parador in Cardona but its a proper pukka ancient castle atop a hill with fortification walls etc etc
Then we move down to the Mediterraneancoast for a 4 night stay, inc sand sea and hopefully sunshine, at Penyiscola about halfway between Barcelona and Valencia.
When we leave Peniscola we start the ride back to Calais and spend the first night in the Pyrenees mountains before crossing into France.
That’s as far as I’ve got as of today but I’m working on it and will update this as soon as I can.
